The short version
- Deep TMS was FDA-cleared for OCD in 2018.
- Not every listed Colorado TMS clinic offers OCD treatment.
- OCD protocols include brief symptom provocation and are used alongside ERP.
- Confirm insurance authorisation and the daily schedule before arranging travel.
Finding OCD treatment in Colorado
Finding a TMS clinic is not quite the same as finding TMS treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Deep TMS was FDA-cleared for OCD in 2018. It uses a different coil and treatment protocol from those commonly used for depression, so a clinic that advertises TMS may not offer the OCD treatment you need.
Only clinics with deep TMS equipment can deliver this approach, and a listing does not confirm that a clinic provides an OCD-specific protocol. Ask whether the clinic currently treats OCD with deep TMS before arranging an assessment or making repeated travel plans.
Treatment includes brief symptom provocation before stimulation: bringing an OCD-related trigger to mind as part of the planned protocol. Ask how the team will agree this with you and keep it focused on your symptoms. Deep TMS is used alongside exposure and response prevention (ERP), rather than replacing that therapy. Coordination matters if your ERP therapist and TMS clinic are in different places.
Access in Colorado Springs and Denver
This directory lists 19 TMS clinics in Colorado Springs and 14 in Denver. These are counts of all listed TMS clinics, not confirmed OCD providers. They are useful places to begin enquiries, but you will still need to check which clinics have deep TMS equipment and an active OCD programme.
The directory also lists eight clinics in Lakewood, five each in Littleton and Boulder, and four each in Longmont, Loveland and Highlands Ranch. For repeated visits, the most useful location may be the one that fits your daily journey rather than the one nearest home. Compare the route from work, school or your ERP appointments, and ask whether the clinic can offer a consistent appointment time.
Before arranging an assessment, ask:
- Do you currently treat OCD with deep TMS?
- Who plans the symptom-provocation part of treatment?
- Can you coordinate with my ERP therapist?
- Can you review my insurance requirements before I arrange repeated travel?
Large Colorado health systems include UCHealth, Intermountain Health, CommonSpirit Health, HealthONE, Kaiser Permanente Colorado and Denver Health. Do not assume that a health system or TMS provider offers OCD-specific deep TMS without confirmation.
Fort Collins, Grand Junction and travel from other areas
The directory lists seven TMS clinics in Fort Collins and five in Grand Junction. It also lists three clinics each in Castle Rock and Centennial. These locations provide a starting point for enquiries, but the listings do not establish which clinics deliver the OCD protocol.
Colorado has 114 published clinics in this directory overall. A local listing may reduce travel only if that clinic has the right equipment and treats OCD. Patients outside larger population centres may need to consider travel to a clinic that can provide the appropriate protocol.
Before committing, discuss whether the clinic can coordinate with your existing clinician and which assessment or follow-up conversations, if any, can happen remotely. This can be particularly important when travel is difficult or when your ERP therapist is based elsewhere.
Planning the course around daily life
A standard TMS course is about 36 weekday sessions over six to nine weeks, with stimulation sessions roughly three to 20 minutes long. Ask for the clinic’s proposed OCD schedule rather than assuming these general timings describe your full appointment. Symptom provocation and other appointment steps also need to fit into your day.
Patients stay awake during treatment and can usually drive themselves home. For someone travelling a long distance, however, the journey may be the largest part of the commitment. Families may need to plan around work, childcare, school and accommodation as well as the treatment itself.
Ask for a written schedule before booking repeated journeys or a temporary stay. Discuss what happens if illness, weather or transport problems cause a missed visit, and whether appointment times can remain consistent throughout the course.
Some clinics offer accelerated theta burst schedules that compress treatment into days. Do not assume an advertised accelerated depression programme is an alternative to the clinic’s OCD protocol. Ask specifically what treatment is being proposed for OCD.
Insurance review and questions before starting
Insurance approval for OCD should be checked separately from coverage for depression. Many insurers typically require documentation of unsuccessful antidepressant trials, psychotherapy and prior authorisation for TMS. OCD-specific requirements may differ, so ask the clinic to confirm the rules for your diagnosis, plan and proposed protocol.
Health First Colorado is Colorado’s Medicaid programme. It is administered by the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing through regional accountable entities. Ask whether the clinic participates in your plan or care arrangement and whether OCD deep TMS is covered; accepting insurance does not itself establish coverage for this treatment.
Gather medication names, treatment dates and records of psychotherapy, including ERP where available. Ask who submits the authorisation request, whether further records are needed and how you will receive the decision. Request an explanation of any expected patient charges before starting or arranging accommodation.
The clinical assessment should also cover safety, expectations and how progress will be reviewed. Common side effects include scalp discomfort and headache; seizure is rare. Tell the clinician about your medical history and current medicines, and ask how the team will assess suitability. Agree how OCD symptoms and daily functioning will be tracked, and how your ERP therapist will be involved during the course.
What a course of treatment looks like
- 1
Consultation and eligibility
A psychiatrist reviews your diagnosis, medication history and safety screening, then confirms whether TMS is appropriate.
- 2
Insurance authorisation
The clinic submits your medication trials and therapy history to your insurer. Approval usually takes one to three weeks.
- 3
Mapping session
Your first visit finds the right coil position and the lowest energy setting that works for you. It takes about an hour.
- 4
Daily treatment
Weekday sessions for six to nine weeks. You sit in a chair, stay awake, and drive yourself home afterwards.
- 5
Taper and review
The final sessions are spaced out while your prescriber reviews your scores and plans maintenance if you need it.
